It contains approximately 2000 entries contributed by 95 international authors (the affiliations for whom are listed), with seven section editors. Entries vary from short definitions to more discursive articles, on subjects of major importance, of up to 2000 words. Longer entries are supported by references to important original papers and reviews, and all entries are fully cross-referenced to related entries within the book. Where appropriate entries are supported by figures, tables and photographs.
